The main charater in The Eyes Were Watching God is Janie Crawford. Janie was a well known young lady in her neighbor hood. She was "the girl next door" to all the guys. Everytime she would walk past they would stop what they were doing to watch and gossip about her. They would describe her physical features in very discriptive ways. Although she was a very beautiful young lady, Janie stuggled to find her identity. The reason why is because she was forced to marry a man she never truly loved. She also stuggled because she had never met her mother or father so she was raised by her grandmother and the white folks her grandmother worked with. In the book it says "Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches." In other words Janie saw the good things in her life but she saw more bad things. More positive and negative was still yet to come for her.

The man Janie was forced to marry, the man that she did not love, was named Tea Cake. Tea Cake never loved Janie. He married her for her money then he ran off with some younger girl. Later on in the book, a hurricane hits Florida, where the book takes place. The hurricane makes all the characters think about themselves and thier lives. As Tea Cake was trying to save Janies life, he was hit by a dog. Tea Cake was infected with rabies. Janie knew that the rabies would affect his attitude/personality towards things and her. As a conclusion Janie decides to kill Tea Cake before he could hurt her. So because of the hurricane Janie was able to understand herself and what her purpose in life was.
